RATTLESNAKE PRESENTATION 003 003 200x300Sadly, one of our oldest Beech trees fell victim to the high winds we experienced at the end of November.

It damaged the H.M.S. Rattle Snake Memorial, an obelisk which is dedicated to 14 Officers, Seaman and Marines who died while the ship was on patrol on the West African station.

The Royal Naval Association (Plymouth Branch) very kindly funded the repair to the obelisk.

Photo shows Jean Northey and Maggie Heath, both Trustees of Ford Park, receiving a cheque of £300 from the Chairman Des McCarthy of the Royal Naval Association (Plymouth Branch).

In the same event we also lost two memorial benches.

We were very lucky that there was so little damage.

49171363 2014195428658327 3238289136548839424 nAble Seaman George Hinckley serving on HMS Sphinx at Fung Wha, China 9th October 1862, under heavy and continuous fire, carried the wounded Assistant Master to shelter. He then returned a carried a wounded Army Captain to shelter. For his outstanding bravery, George Hinckley was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Every year friends and family come to the cemetery on 31 December to remember George and celebrate his life. This year 59 people attended the memorial service. Reverend Martin Kirkbride conducted the service at Ford Park Cemetery's Victorian Chapel and at the grave.

The weather remained reasonable, no repeat of last year's deluge of rain. Afterwards everyone enjoyed the opportunity to get together over tea/coffee and pasties.

George Hinckley VC memorial service at Ford Park Cemetery on 31 Dec 2017.

This annual event, arranged by family and friends, was supported by more than 60 family members and friends this year. Thanks to Jenny Homeyard for taking the photographs and also to the volunteers who helped make today a success despite the weather.

Strip Garden 500pxWork in progress on the latest area of strip garden for the Commonwealth War Graves on the edge of Section GL (Roman Catholic Section). Photos show the special equipment used to carefully raise and move the old slate headstones to allow the ground to be prepared for laying to lawn and creating a suitable flower bed.

Later the bed will be planted to include Trumpeter roses bushes, as can be seen already in other parts of the cemetery. The Trumpeter rose is a beautiful vivid red and each bush continues to produce flowers well into the autumn.

Carol Service 500pxThe Friends of Ford Park Annual Carol Service was held on Thursday evening. The event is always well supported and the Victorian Chapel was at capacity. The congregation was in great voice, accompanied by organist Paul Whitell. A regular feature of the event is the attendance of a local primary school choir and this year we were entertained by the children of Marine Academy Primary who sang five songs including a beautiful rendition of "Somewhere Only We Know".

The choir were tutored once again by our favourite Choirmaster Kingsley Clennel-White. Special thanks must go to Reverend Trevor White who stood in at the last minute to save the day as Reverend Andrew Day was unwell. After the service the congregation was invited to join us in the Visitor Centre for refreshments provided by Sue and Mike Rapson.
