Able Seaman George Hinckley serving on HMS Sphinx at Fung Wha, China 9th October 1862, under heavy and continuous fire, carried the wounded Assistant Master to shelter. He then returned a carried a wounded Army Captain to shelter. For his outstanding bravery, George Hinckley was awarded the Victoria Cross.
Every year friends and family come to the cemetery on 31 December to remember George and celebrate his life. This year 59 people attended the memorial service. Reverend Martin Kirkbride conducted the service at Ford Park Cemetery's Victorian Chapel and at the grave.
The weather remained reasonable, no repeat of last year's deluge of rain. Afterwards everyone enjoyed the opportunity to get together over tea/coffee and pasties.
