The kids will love it but probably not as much as their parents!!

Jimmy Peters HeadstoneFor Black History Month, we are celebrating the life of Jimmy Peters, who was the first black player to play rugby union for England. There is a display in the visitor centre that tells his life story.
The new headstone, shown here, was installed by his granddaughters in the past few years.

The display will be open in the Visitor Centre on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th October from 10.30 am until 4.00pm each day. The kids will love it and it's just possible that Mums and Dads will too. We look forward to welcoming you to a fun weekend.

On Saturday, 10th October 2020, the Craft Club was able to hand over £1,000 from their Bric a Brac weekend Stall, started eight weeks previously; £100 from refreshments sold the weekend of the Model Railway Exhibition and £400 from money raised by their Craft Club, before Corvid 19.

Sunday, 11th October 2020, saw the Third Anniversary of the Craft Club, whose members, due to Corvid 19, are busy working away at home to supply their weekend Craft Stall.

Well done and a big thank you to all of you.

74441910 2547094845368380 5687011504243605504 nIf you enjoy quizzes, why not come along to the Visitor Centre at the cemetery on Saturday evening at 7.30pm where we are holding a Quiz Night with a fish and chip supper.

Entry is £10 per person which includes the fish and chip supper.

Participants can choose to take part in the quiz as individuals or in teams but please note that teams will be limited to a maximum of four persons.

Quiz night at the cemetery is always a fun evening and we look forward to welcoming you to the Visitor Centre.

Our Exhibition will be closed 24th October, due to a wake in the Visitors Centre.

72343577 2484877008256831 1313356945637244928 n 212x300On Sunday 6th October at 2pm the Heritage team will be leading a walk around the cemetery to complement our latest exhibition, Devonport's Heritage, People and Places.


We will be visiting the graves of some of Devonport's well-respected people including John Pethick, Henry Whitfeld, Alfred Norman and James Doel.

We look forward to welcoming you to the cemetery.

44723286 1909981019079769 5693522356836761600 nLast week we were pleased to welcome two more groups of schoolchildren from Pennycross School.

The theme was, once again, a tour of the World War 1 Commonwealth War Graves.

The weather was ideal for each tour and the children enjoyed trying out their brass rubbing skills as can be seen from the photo.

walk 300x225The sponsored walk on the treadmill will be carried out by staff and volunteers, a total of 73 miles will be walked collectively, the equivalent from Ford Park Cemetery to Lands’ end.

The money raised will go towards the £90,000 needed to re - instate the Bell Turret in the Victorian Chapel.

Between now and 19th November you can sponsor one of the team by calling in at the office or giving the office a telephone call or e-mail.

Why not come along during that week and encourage our walkers and, of course, if you feel the urge to sponsor one of our team, that would be very welcome.

The final day of the walk will take place during our Christmas Fayre 24th November, we hope to see you there.

44113550 1900249366719601 2294403956526284800 nOn Sunday afternoon members of the Heritage team led a walk around the cemetery visiting the graves and telling the stories of some of those who died during World War 1.

After heavy rain during the morning, the skies cleared so thank you to all those who joined us.

Today we were pleased to host a group of schoolchildren and their teachers from Pennycross School.

The theme was a tour of the WWI Commonwealth War Graves.

43473314 1892158917528646 1688594047716818944 nMembers of our Heritage team talked about the lives of some of the military personnel buried at the cemetery and the children also had an opportunity for a closer look at the headstones and try out some brass rubbings.

The walk will be starting at the Visitor Centre and we will be visiting the graves of some of the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

The team look forward to welcoming you to the Visitor Centre for this latest exhibition and walk.

43328189 1889641931113678 7716994691090087936 nOur latest exhibition "A War to End all Wars!" started Saturday (6th October) and provides a look back over the four years of World War I culminating in Armistice Day on the 11th November.

The annual parade took place yesterday.

Captain Henry was awarded the Victoria Cross 5 November 1854 for his actions at the Battle of Inkermann.

He was the first member of the Royal Regiment of Artillery to be awarded the Victoria Cross.
