The first destination on our Journeys from Plymouth is the continent of Africa.

The so-called “Scramble for Africa”,
driven by the industrialised nations’ need to secure for themselves supplies of raw materials and minerals, started in the 1880s.

Next stop on our journey is the Americas.

And now we are travelling down south to Antarctica and a celebration of Captain Robert Falcon Scott.

From Hong Kong we move to Australia where we feature George Inskip and also tell the sad story of the Treloar family.

Today we move north to Canada.

To many working-class Victorian families, struggling in the
early days of the Industrial Revolution, emigration offered
the prospect of higher wages and land ownership in the
colonies. The government viewed emigration as a means of
both strengthening imperial claims and avoiding social
unrest nearer to home.

The final leg of our journey finds us in the seas around Australia.
