Introduction

The Trust's first Heritage Trail booklet was published in 2004, four years after its formation. It was compiled following biographical research carried out by volunteers and was written by Dr Henry Will MBE, the Trust's first Chairman. Since that time, the good work carried out by those first volunteers has continued, and because subsequent research has revealed so many more interesting stories of those buried in the Cemetery, this second volume has been produced.

The history of the Plymouth, Devonport and Stonehouse Cemetery Company at Ford Park, from its early beginnings to its decline and eventual demise in 1999 can be found in the original booklet.

The introduction to the original Heritage Trail concluded with the following words.
"It is the challenge for our generation, which has inherited this historic burial ground with its unique heritage and environmental significance, to refashion that inheritance to meet the needs and aspirations of the 21st century. We owe it those who came before us, and to those who will come after us, to meet the challenge. It will not be easy, but with goodwill and support from public and private bodies, and above all from the community, this vision is achievable. It is a task for a generation, and it is one to which the Trust has dedicated itself unreservedly."

It was important for this new organisation to set out its aspirations clearly, and this was done in the form of a mission statement. Those aims are still relevant today.

  • To restore, preserve and manage Ford Park Cemetery as a safe, beautiful and accessible burial ground
  • To cherish and make better known its heritage of history, architecture, sculpture and landscape.
  • To create a space of beauty and peace for all Plymothians, and to pre- serve and propagate the wildlife which it supports.
